This conference is for people seeking or thinking of
seeking guardianship of a child. Kinship Legal Guardianship is a
legal option to become a child's legal guardian in order to provide
a safe and stable home for a child. In all cases the child must have
been living with the kinship caregiver for at least one year. In
some instances the guardian can receive a stipend. This conference
will assist those who have questions about taking guardianship,
whether through a DYFS case or by filing a private petition. It will
also address the many distinctions between adoption and Kinship
Legal Guardianship for those faced with making that decision. For
participants who have already been awarded Kinship Legal
Guardianship, the conference presenters will address on-going issues
such as resources for children, and visitation and custody changes. |

| Location | Farleigh Dickinson University,
Metropolitan Campus 1000 River Road Teaneck , NJ 07666 |
| Hyperlink | http://june42010culturalnarrativesoftrauma.eventbrite.com/ |
| Notes | Across continents and cultures, traumatic events leave their mark on individuals, families and communities, whether through natural disasters, interpersonal violence or large scale events of man-made intention. The past decade has witnessed a burgeoning professional literature on the impact of trauma, resulting in significant advances in trauma-based interventions. This conference will examine the philosophy and practices behind the concept of trauma-informed systems of care, emphasizing cultural competence as a foundation for such care. Trauma-informed care presents a fundamental "paradigm shift" in how we approach assessment and intervention across services, populations and settings. Set within the context of cultural competence, such systems of care demonstrate real potential for moving beyond treatment to foster healing and transformation. This conference will offer participants an array of learning experiences that present various aspects of culturally competent, trauma-informed systems of care, from the perspectives of professionals in the field, consumers and advocates. |
